Hemophilia
Common bleeding disorders
Common bleeding disorders include:
  • Hemophilia A and B: Inherited conditions (more common in males) caused by low levels of clotting factor VIII or IX, leading to joint, muscle, or prolonged bleeding. Female carriers can be symptomatic and should be evaluate for potential issues with bleeding complications.
  • Von Willebrand disease: This is the most common inherited bleeding disorder but has been under-diagnosed, especially in affected females. It can cause recurrent nosebleeds, easy bruising, and heavy periods.
  • Platelet disorders: Platelets may be low in number or may not function normally, causing mucosal bleeding typically of the nose and gums or can cause easy bruising with minimal trauma.
  • Acquired bleeding disorders: Can develop later in life due to medications (such as blood thinners), liver disease, vitamin deficiencies, or immune conditions. There are rare cases of acquired inhibitors that can cause bleeding issues as well.
Treatment depends on the specific disorder and severity and may include medications to help clotting, replacement of missing clotting factors, or treatments to reduce bleeding during procedures. Many people with bleeding disorders live full, active lives with proper care.
